Pyrolysis
R&D
Technician

Carbon Lock Tech is developing next-generation biomass pyrolysis systems to remove and permanently store carbon. Our technology is designed, built, tested, and operated entirely in-house, giving our team full ownership of the engineering lifecycle.

We are currently looking to hire a Pyrolysis Research and Development (R&D) Technician. This is not a narrow, desk-only role—you will wear multiple hats across design, fabrication, installation and live system operation. You will work directly on reactor systems, contribute to active R&D, and help push technology from prototype to commercial deployment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Mechanical design, assembly, maintenance and modification of process equipment, and supporting equipment to enable different test configurations and ensure reliable operation.

  • Design, assembly and modification of process associated piping, supports, utility connections and sub-systems.

  • Perform light fabrication and fit-up work: cutting, drilling, grinding, mounting components, making brackets, adapting frames, and coordinating larger fabrication work with qualified shops or contractors.

  • Operate the patented pyrolysis reactor and auxiliary systems during test campaigns, including start-up, steady-state operation, shutdown, and routine equipment checks.

  • Troubleshoot operational issues during campaigns by interpreting instrument trends and alarms, then performing safe hands-on corrective actions (e.g., clearing blockages, tightening connections, replacing faulty components or system modifications).

  • Create, modify, and maintain CAD drawings and models to support installation, operation, troubleshooting, fabrication, and continuous improvement

  • Assist in the creation of test campaigns, provide impactful process improvements and perform rigorous data collection that will require an understanding of the system from an operational and engineering perspective.

Required Skills and Qualifications include:

  • Graduated from a Canadian recognized technology or engineering program

  • Ability to work under minimal supervision in a fast-paced, dynamic environment – a must.

  • Comfortable working outside typical equipment configurations when R&D objectives require it – a must.

  • Applicants must reside in Manitoba and be willing and able to work in Headingley, Manitoba

Position Expectations

The ideal applicant is someone who prefers being close to real equipment rather than working in an office. They must also exhibit the following performance expectations:

  • Own the Outcome: Take responsibility for the result, coordinate with others, communicate progress, and drive the work through completion.

  • Plan Ahead: Identify next steps, dependencies, missing information, resource needs, and risks before they become blockers.

  • Execute with Urgency and Judgment: Maintain momentum and deliver fit-for-purpose work while protecting safety, data integrity, and critical engineering quality.

  • Surface and Solve Early: Raise risks and blockers immediately with the facts, likely impacts, and a recommended path forward where practical.

Why Join Us?

  • Work on real hardware, real systems, and real climate impact

  • Full exposure to the lifecycle: design → build → test → operate → scale

  • High ownership and responsibility from day one

  • Fast-paced, no-red-tape environment where ideas get built quickly

  • Be part of a small, driven team pushing technology forward
